Propecia can cause permanent erectile dysfunction
- WHL.org
10/06/2011 - It’s officially documented: Propecia can cause prolonged sexual side effects as well permanent erectile dysfunction.
Propecia is a controversial drug manufactured by Merck which contains finasteride, a synthetic antiandrogen that inhibits type II 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Finasteride was initially approved by the FDA in 1992 under the name Proscar for treating BPH, and later in 1997 was approved to treat male pattern baldness.
The mechanism of finasteride is that it is an inhibitor of 5-alpha reductase. By blocking this enzyme, finasteride blocks the conversion of testosterone into the more powerful androgen DHT. This reduces androgenic activity in the scalp, treating hair loss at its hormonal source (NOT at the source of hair loss, however).
The study was done by George Washington University School of Medicine, and has been peer reviewed and will appear in the upcoming Journal of Sexual Medicine.
This study joins several other findings that show that the use of finasteride may result in irreversible sexual dysfuncion, such as the December 2008 findings by the Swedish Medical Products agency.
These findings illustrate how Propeciahelp.com and many other individuals that bravely risked ridicule and stuck their necks out about this issue without financial motive were very right to do so -and these findings wouldn’t have been officially looked into if it wasn’t four their outcry. We now know Propecia has a much higher rate of erectile side effects than previously reported, can cause long term erectile dysfunction even after the drug is stopped, and can lead to permanent erectile dysfunction in others.
Despite negative personal experiences, the editors of this site have attempted to stay neutral regarding the use of this controversial drug due to the fact that its DHT-blocking mechanism for fighting hair loss is at least theoretically based in sound knowledge and research. However, with these new revelations regarding Propecia, the safety of this drug must be brought to light and taken under heavy consideration. Any future serious discussion of finasteride for hair loss should include these new findings.
So, use Propecia at your own risk, and knowledge is power.
